Two clean air buses to replace two oldest TCSD buses

The 2018 Thomas Built Buses are the first of their kind to the district and will replace the school district’s two oldest buses which have more than 564,000 road miles combined.

The new buses will be put into service October 24th and include features such as:

  • Webasto heaters, which blow warm air throughout the bus without the bus idling.
  • Seats with additional leg room for students.
  • A built-in child reminder system which alerts drivers if there are any students left on board at the end of a trip.
  • Metal guards near the engine to protect drivers as they make their daily vehicle inspections.
  • Engines built to match newer, more stringent, emission standards created by the Environmental Protection Agency.

According to TCSD Transportation Supervisor, Dustin Nelson, the old buses will be permanently disabled and scrapped at Green Box Recycling. Money received from the facility will go back into the transportation budget.

Currently, there are 100 buses in the district, 82 bus drivers, 21 bus aides, four mechanics and five office staff members meeting the needs of the 4,598 students being bused each day.

Applications have been submitted for additional funding to replace other aging buses.
